Benefits of Invisalign over Braces

dentist explaining teeth straightening

Invisalign is a great alternative to traditional braces. If your dentist decides that you are suitable for Invisalign, here are the reasons why you’ll definitely love it!

Invisibility

Invisalign is virtually invisible, allowing you to acquire a beautiful smile without feeling embarrassed or putting your life on hold as compared to wearing metal braces.

No Food Restrictions

Eat whatever you want! Eating sticky or hard food wouldn’t be a problem since there are no brackets that might fall off or break during the chewing process.

Comfort

Traditional metal braces have brackets that can pierce soft tissues (lip, cheeks, tongue), and eventually turn into a painful mouth sore. Unlike metal braces, Invisalign trays are smooth, preventing any soft tissue irritation and are custom made for you.

No Monthly Agony

Invisalign trays move your teeth slowly through a series of aligners with a gentle force, unlike traditional braces whereby the dentist tightens the wires during review appointments.

Improved Oral Hygiene and Cleanliness

Your clear aligners are removable. Therefore it is easier and more convenient in keeping your teeth clean and also to eat.  You will be able to clean the aligners using a mouth rinse and a soft-bristled brush. Without any fixed brackets and wires in your mouth, there will be fewer areas for plaque retention – which means, keeping your mouth healthy!

Stay Sporty

Invisalign allows you to be more comfortable doing physical activities without the scrapes and cuts caused by other orthodontic options. With metal braces, brackets and wires could pop out of place, resulting in a mouth injury.

Since Invisalign trays are custom-fit over your teeth and gums, you’ll enjoy a snug fit, so that falls, blows, and other impacts would not jostle your aligners out of place or damage them in any way. And of course, these aligners can always be removed before a game or practice for added peace of mind.

Less Treatment Time

Invisalign clear aligners can work faster than traditional metal bracket systems. Fixed braces can often take an average of two years or more to fully transform your smile, whereas, results of Invisalign can be seen in as early as six months to 1 year.

Indications for Invisalign

Invisalign is most successful for treating mild to moderate misaligned bite problems, such as:

  • Gapped Teeth – too much space or gaps in between teeth
  • Crooked/Crowded Teeth – there are too many teeth to fit the jaw causing misalignment
  • Overbite – upper teeth excessively overlap the lower teeth
  • Underbite – lower front teeth abnormally protrudes the upper front teeth
  • Crossbite – teeth in the lower arch is positioned outside of the upper teeth
  • Open bite – upper and lower teeth don’t touch when your mouth is closed
  • Children with narrow dental arches – this is mostly detected in the early years of a child

The Invisalign craze is sweeping the dental world, and many patients want to be a part of the journey. However, not everyone is suitable for Invisalign treatment. Here are some of the limitations of Invisalign:

  • Severe crowding of teeth that requires removal of teeth to gain space
  • Bite issues
  • Severe rotation of teeth
  • Have a lot of dental crown and bridgework
  • Skeletal malocclusion that requires the intervention of traditional braces and possible surgical intervention

These are just some of the indications and limitations of Invisalign treatment that we can further discuss at your appointment with Lifestyle Smiles.

Invisalign Procedure

Initial Consultation & Taking of Digital Records

If you decide to take this course of orthodontic treatment, your dentist will examine your teeth thoroughly to make sure Invisalign is the right choice for you. It is also the best time to ask questions about your treatment plan.

Once you have decided to go ahead, and your teeth are healthy enough to start treatment, your dentist will take digital x-rays, a full 3D scan, and photographs of your teeth. These records will be sent to the Invisalign laboratory for the next step.

3D Virtual Simulation of your Results (Clincheck)

After 1-2 weeks, your dentist will have completed your 3D Virtual Simulation and be able to show you what your final result will look like. This is something that traditional braces cannot do. It is also the best time to ask any final questions before you begin your Invisalign Journey.

Your First Aligner

After the laboratory has created your aligners, your dentist will ask you to come back to the clinic for your first aligners. We will also add a few attachments, which will help to move your teeth. Also, your dentist will run through a series of instructions on how to wear your aligners and also to look after them.

Follow Up Visits

Your dentist will see you every six to eight weeks to check on your progress. Depending on the movement of your teeth, subsequent aligners will be handed over to you as long as your progress is satisfactory.

What to Expect

You are expected to wear your clear aligners for 22 hours a day for best results. You might experience minor speech distortions during the first few days of wearing your aligners as your tongue is adjusting to the new device. After your tongue is used to the aligners, the slight lisp will eventually diminish.

You may also experience slight discomfort every time you change to a new set of aligners as they will feel tight. Your aligners will loosen over time as your teeth start to move into its new position.

On average, Invisalign treatment takes approximately 12-16 months to complete. However depending on the individual, treatment time can also be shorter than 12 months. It usually requires 14-36 aligners to achieve final results, but varies from each patient depending on their treatment plan.

Love this place. Staff are always smiling and really friendly to deal with. They are also very informative with their patients so I felt like I was in perfect hands. Been to a few different dentists, this was the dentist I love from start to finish.
