What Is the Average Treatment Time Frame for Dental Implants?
Hi, my name is Dr Warren Antonoff, I’m the principal dentist at Lifestyle Smile here at Brighton in Melbourne.

Yesterday Tom from Beumauris asked me, if I go with dental implants, when will I have my teeth? Because this is such an important topic, I thought I’d make a quick video, sharing with you some of the important considerations dentists have around implant treatment timeframes.

Based on decades of research, typically from removing the tooth, placement of a dental implant, and delivering the final tooth, the process takes about 3-6 months. During this time, if the missing tooth is in an area of aesthetic concern, the dentist can give you a temporary tooth to wear.

Occasionally, however, if the quality of the bone is really good or you need all your teeth removed and you are suitable for All on 4 implant treatment, you may be able to receive your teeth within a few days, or sometimes even on the same day!

On the other hand, if the tooth you’re replacing has a substantial infection or abscess, or the quality and quantity of your underlying bone are not ideal, then the treatment time will take longer. So if you require either bone grafting or soft tissue grafting, sometimes the process can take up to or more than 12 months before you can have your permanent replacement. So as you can see, the treatment time frame from start to finish is really case dependent.
Now, let’s be honest, nobody wants dental implants, when you have a missing tooth, all you want is a tooth replacement. So when the dentist tells you that it might be months before you can have the tooth, this can be annoying. And especially at an age where we have social media, uber eats, super-fast internet… well… maybe not the internet part in Australia, people want things quick and they want it NOW.
But the reality is, placing an implant into your bone is a biological process. As advanced as technology might be, we cannot speed up the way your body heals, and if we don’t respect our body and try to hasten the process, sometimes the consequences can be dire.
Dental implants have been around for more than 50 years, and the very first few dental implants ever placed, whether you believe it or not, is still functional in someone’s mouth out there. So undoubtedly, replacing missing teeth with dental implants can be one of the best treatment options.

If you have a missing tooth and want a professional opinion to replace it, we would love to help. Simply complete the form on the website, give us a call, or send us a direct message on social media, and we will help you organise your appointment. See you in the next video.
