What Causes Teeth Sensitivity and What Can I Do About It?

Hi! I’m Dr Stefanie. I’m the associate dentist here at Lifestyle Smiles in Brighton Melbourne.

One of the most common reasons why people come to the dentist after neglecting their teeth for many years is sensitivity. All of a sudden out of the blue, eating something cold, like ice cream or even drinking water out of a tap can send a shockwave through a tooth, sometimes it subsides straight away, other times it could last for minutes before calming down. So let’s look at some of the common reasons and causes of teeth sensitivity?
You have a deep hole in a tooth. You see… when you have a small hole, typically there’s no sensation. That’s because there are no nerve endings on the outer surfaces of the tooth. If the small hole isn’t’ fixed, then it will grow and grow until it gets close, or hits the nerve. Then you’ll get either sensitivity or sharp pain. That’s why regular dental checkups and X rays are so so important. A simple filling could turn into a root canal or an extraction if the nerve is damaged beyond repair.
The second common reason for sensitivity is gum recession. And that could be caused by a number of reasons. If you have gum disease, your gums could recede. Or if you brush too hard, or brush with the wrong technique, that could also cause gums to shrink. Typically when gums shrink they will not grow back on their own. So avoiding it from occurring in the first place is always better than the cure.
The third reason why teeth could become sensitive is trauma. Trauma can come from the form of an accidental knock, or it could come from unexpected grinding at night. There are many people in the community who grind their teeth without them even knowing. So treating the grinding, and letting the tooth settle down usually will do the trick.

So if you are experiencing teeth sensitivity, it is a good indication it’s time to visit a dentist before it gets worse and more painful. If that is you, we would love to help.
