How Do I Fix My Gummy Smile?

Hi, my name is Dr Stefanie and I’m the associate dentist of Lifestylesmiles here at Brighton in Melbourne. We just booked in a new patient Kiara from Caulfield to help her with her gummy smile. During her smile consultation, she asked me, Dr Warren, I hate the fact that there is so much gum showing when I smile, what can I do about it? This is actually a common cosmetic problem we help with many of our patients, so I thought I’ll make a quick video sharing with you your options just in case you are experiencing the same issue

A gummy smile can be attributed to many reasons, and depending on the cause, the treatment options are different as well
The first reason could be short teeth or excess gum. Sometimes a gummy smile is due to an overgrowth of the gum. What it means is, your teeth should actually be longer than what they are, but for whatever reason, the gum has overgrown and covers more teeth than it should. This is very common and many people actually don’t even realise they have it. To treat this kind of gummy smile, we could either recontour the gum with a soft tissue laser or perform a session of simple gum surgery to remove the excess gum.
The second reason could be what we called Hyper-mobile Lip. I’m sure we all know of someone within our friend circle when they talk naturally, everything seems normal, and all of a sudden someone cracks a joke and make everyone laugh, and you see more pink than white. This is due to their lips being hyper-mobile, or in other words, their upper lip moves up too much.

Let’s be honest, having a slightly more mobile lip is not a disease, so nothing needs to be done. And it’s something that usually people can control fairly well, so when smiling in front of a camera they would have learnt over the years not to smile too much to hide the imperfection that way.

On the other hand, when we get older, naturally our lips will lose elasticity and drop, thanks to gravity. So the gumminess will slowly improve as you age. But if you want to fix this issue now, because you have a wedding coming up, or it’s really bothering you. Some botox in the upper lip will fix this issue.

The third major cause of a gummy smile is due to excess growth of bone in your upper jaw. This is probably the most difficult to treat because you will need to see an oral surgeon for jaw surgery. It’s not very pleasant and it can be expensive to do. However, it can be life-changing and it’s a procedure commonly performed.

As you can see, there are many causes of a gummy smile, and the treatment options vary as well. So if you are experiencing a gummy smile, and want to do something about it, we would love to help.
