What Is the Cost of Dental Crown
Hi, my name is Dr Warren. I’m the principal dentist of Lifestyle Smiles. Yesterday one of client Melissa from Brighton asked me, “How much is the cost of a dental crown?”. This is actually a very common question that people ring up and ask us. So I thought I’ll share a bit more information so that you understand the reasons behind why not all dental crowns are the same.

The most important question is, “Who makes the actual crown?” Did you know… Dental crowns are not made by your dentists. They are actually made by dental technicians who do their craft in their own laboratory. In order for the dental crown to look and feel natural in a mouth, as well as functioned to withstand the constant force of the bite, it is an art form combined with precise engineering.

A painting that is created by famous artist will cost a lot more than a painting made by an average Joe with minimal experience. So the experience dental technician and the quality of the dental lab can impact the cost of the crown.

Where is the crown going to be placed? Is it on a back tooth where you can’t see it, or is on the front tooth, which requires customised characterisation to make it blend in with the other teeth? One thing that people don’t realise is that creating a single dental crown on one tooth that matches perfectly with the rest of the teeth is one of the most difficult things to achieve. So it requires a lot of meticulous work, both from the dentist as well as the dental technician, to ensure that the execution of the job is as perfect as possible. So as a result, a crown on a front tooth will cost more than a crown on the back tooth.

What material is used? There are many different types of materials that can be used to create a dental crown. And you might think, well, all crowns are made out of porcelain, it’s as simple as that. Well, the answer is not as straightforward. Did you know that there are hundreds of different types of porcelain that you can use to create a dental crown?

In addition to that, some crowns are made with porcelain on the outside and metal on the inside. and sometimes to protect the back tooth a gold crown may still be the best way to go. And you know what, gold does cost a more than porcelain.

Now, what if the crown is to be placed on top of an implant? If you have an implant crown, then there are all these little componentry that goes inside the crown, so an implant crown will cost more than just a normal crown.

So you can see, there are so many factors in terms of the dental technician who makes the crown, the type and quality of the material that is used, and where the crown is placed that can vary the cost of a dental crown.

In terms of price, generally speaking, in Australia, a dental crown would cost anywhere between 1500-2800 dollars based on the factors that we just discussed.

I hope this video has given you an insight of the factors that vary the cost of a crown. If you are looking to secure your tooth or a few teeth with dental crown, we would love to look after you.
