What Makes a Beautiful Smile: The Teeth

Dr Warren Antonoff

Dr. Warren Antonoff

In last month’s article, Dr. Antonoff introduced the concept of modern Cosmetic Dentistry as a fusion of Artistic practice with Scientific methods. In this second article, we will explore how the teeth influences the perceptions of what makes a beautiful smile.

What constitutes a beautiful smile? We’ve already discussed that beauty is subjective, so in this article we’ll focus on a more methodical treatment of this topic. To me, creating a beautiful smile is similar to building a house. Once you know the dimensions of the land (the face), and after the floor plan has been finalised (the lips and gums), you can start to construct the house and decorate the interior (the teeth).

At Lifestyle Smiles, we see a spectrum of patients at the clinic – some prefer an “understated, natural” look while others want a bright “Hollywood Smile”. Either way, as dental professionals it is our role to help you feel great about yourself!

Facial proportions, in particular facial symmetry, the gums and lips, all have important roles to play both from a functional and aesthetic perspective. On top of that, of course, your teeth play an important role in shaping our perceptions!

There are four key dimensions when looking at teeth:

1. Size of Teeth

If individual teeth are too big, you may end up looking like Bugs!

If individual teeth are too big, you may end up looking like Bugs!

It’s critical that the teeth fit the face, and vice versa. In general, if the teeth are too small for the face, then you’ll end up having gaps between the teeth. Conversely, if the teeth are too big, then most likely you’ll experience crowding. If individual teeth are too big, then you may end up looking like Bugs Bunny! If individual teeth are too small, it can throw the balance off as well.

2. Shape of Teeth

In general, teeth are categorised into three shapes: Square, Triangular or Oval. There has been some suggestion that the shape of one’s teeth can determine somewhat the character of that person. Usually feminine teeth are more rounded and a dominant individual would have more square-ish and shape edged teeth. There are no hard and fast rules, at the end of the day it comes down to each to their own.

3. Colour

Many celebrities want a bright, white "Hollywood Smile"

Celebrities like them white, sometimes very very white! Many patients prefer a more “natural white” smile, not the glow in the dark type! Our Teeth Whitening treatments allow you to achieve the level of “whiteness” that you desire.

4. Position and Alignment

Without going into too much detail, once you have the right size, shape and colour of teeth, they may need to be aligned properly to complete the perfect look. This could be either achieved through braces, Invisalign, Crowns or Veneers. Or… simply nothing at all! We’ll consult with each patient on an individual basis to shape the most appropriate and desirable treatment plan.
